Bloody 2011 finish as quick as you can, one of the worst year of my life. Planned funeral of my father couple of times but he's still with us, cancer couldn't beat him and I'm pleased to have him around. The year which I took break from work for the first time in my life because of family problems. The year I could see all of the members of my family. The year that I had support of my family after I even don't remember from close by. The year I said back off to big guys at work and stood up against them and told them they SUCK as a human being and I'm not willing to become one of them. The year I didn't publish none-sense journal papers and left to the ones who really dependent on them and instead work on some totally different matters. The years I was congratulated with the most arrogant professors in Canada for changing the culture of one building. The year I spent time with my mother who doesn't remember my last 15 years and thinks I'm still her young daughter. The year that in worse situations with my sisters and brother could still laugh and give each other comfort. The year I survived my nightmares of going to funeral of my parents every night. The year I made new friends and made stronger friendship with some of my old friends. The year some of my old friends transforms to just familiar faces and I'm so sorry to admit it. The year I spent time in 4 different continents. The year I went through financial crises and only my family and couple of friends were and are around. The year I proved to myself once more I'm a survivor and will make it somehow and will never take any shit from anybody specially the ones in higher power. The year I've got surprised with support of some very unexpected people. The year I watched my dreams passing by my eyes without any thing I can do about it. The year I was fortunate enough to spend time with my nephews and niece. The year I could make myself smile even when the whole world was collapsing around me. The year I didn't feel wiser at all but I felt definitely stronger. oh well here I am still alive and around and can smile and laugh at all of the problems. Thanks to all who know who they are and they helped me through this situation and big middle fingers to those who just made my days ruined with their insensitive comments and their arrogance or even couldn't bother to just be there as a friend. Miracle miracle I'm alive and still haven't lost my ability to help and comfort the others who are in need. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU

می گن داره عید مشه کمتر از یک ساعت به سال تحویل مونده و من مشغول تمیز کردنم. پیرتر از اونیم که تظاهر به کاری بکنم. پنجره بزرگ اتاق نشیمن بازه و هوای کانادا امروز دلگیر و گرفته است یا شایدم این دل منه که خونه از دست زمین و زمان و بدجوری گرفته

عجب سالی بود پر از اتفاقات ریز و درشت. از منی که از دست سیستم دانشگاهی ذله شد و سعی کرد همه چیز و تغییر بده. خونواده ای توی استرالیا نداشتم ولی حداقل چند تا دوستی داشتم که اگر هم زبان نبودیم هم زبون بودیم. اگه احساس تنهایی بود یه نوک پا می شد رفت خونه شون و درد دل کرد. اگه توی خیابون گرفته می دیدنت دعوت می کردن به یه تعطیلات اجباری. هنوز یادم نمی ره روزی که دونا مجبورم کرد یک ساعته بلیط تازمانیا بگیرم و با خودش و ریچارد برم ویلاشون. نذاشتن دست به سیاه و سفید بزنم. ریچارد راه می رفت می گفت تو یه فرشته ای فقط رکی همه ازت بابتش می ترسن ولی اگر بشناسنت ولت نمی کنن.

همه چیز و ول کردم تا بیام به یه سر دیگه دنیا که وقتی می گی سلام می پرسن چی می خوای و اگر مثل من گفتی چطوری از وحشت در می رن

اومدم وسط دانشگاهایی که می گن بهترینها توی دنیان آره راست می گن شوی عظیمیه ولی داخلش بدجوری بوی مرداب می یاد. استادهایی که خرخره هم و برای چند دلار و دانشجو می جون. محیطهایی که بوی گند تبلیغ و بیزینس ازش در می یاد. و در کنارش دانشجوهای ایرونیی که فکر می کنن خدان. البته حق دارن از مملکتی می یان که دولتش از هر فرصتی برای توی سر ملتش زدن استفاده می کنه

دولتی که در عرض چند ثانیه یه آدم معمولی که هیچ علاقه ای به سیاست نداشته رو تبدیل به سنبل آزادگی می کنه. دولتی که همه رو توی زندونها خفه می کنه حالا این می تونه حسین درخشان با تحلیلهای بی سر و ته باشه یا پیرمردان با فکری مثل یزدی و ملکی
اصلا توی اون خراب شده حساب کنابی نیست

یکی مثل من می خواسته بره مادر مریضش و ببینه و پدر پیرش می گه خیلی هم بیخود خواهرت تحت نظره. خلاصه توی اون صفحه شطرنج هر کی هر لحظه می تونه کم رنگ یا خیلی پررنگ بشه

و من اینجا دارم روی پروژه غول بی شاخ و دم جنرالز موتور کار می کنم. ۱۲۰۰ محققش و بیکار کرده و جاش ۸۰ تا کانادایی از جمله من و یه لشگر آدم از چین گرفته. به جز من همه باد به غبغبن هیچ کی نمی گه آخه خرا پولی نمی دن بهمون که داریم مجانی کار می کنیم. البته ناگفته نماند که کاناداییها خوب دارن این چند میلیون دلار و به گند می کشن.
سعی می کنم دلم و خوش کنم و میگم دانشگاست داریم آموزش می دیم. بعد روزی حداقل ده تا مقاله آشغال می خونم که طرف اسم پسرخاله هاش و نوشته تا سال دیگه که خواست دنبال کار بگرده مقاله هاش و به رخ این و اون بکشه می گن بدبینی و من این و بهشون نشون میدم. آخیش بلاخره یکی حرف زد

دوباره نفس عمیق می کشی و سعی میکنی عید رو مرور کنی. هومممممم کدوم عید؟ عیدی که حتی یکی از این دوستای ایرونی ریز و درشت توی کانادا حاضر نشدن بگن کجا چه خبره. بوق و کرناشون راجع به ایران ببخیشید پرژن بودن سر به فلک می ذاره ولی ته دلاشون خدا داند. از ایرونی بودن پز و قربون صدقه هاش یادمون مونده. صفا و صمیمیت؟ دلت خوشه ها

ماتبو اینجا بود و گفت زهره کرکتر دانشکده گم شده باید برگردی. اول نمی فهمم چی می گه ولی الآن می بینم راست می گه از ایرونی و غیر ایرونی تازه وارد و دور هم جمع می کردم سعی کردم همدمشون باشم و حالا می بینم همون چیزای کوچیک من و از بقیه متفاوت می کرد و گرنه این مقاله های آشغالی رو همه می تونن بنویسن.

هوممم باید فکر کنم این سال جدید می خوام چیکار کنم.

مسلما تلفن به خونواده و حرفهای تکراری سال نو مبارک

در عرض چند ماه آینده کار کردن مثل خر و دنبال کار گشتن. احتمال نود درصد جابجایی دوباره کجا خدا داند

داریم نزدیک می شیم به سالی که دوباره من توش گم و گور خواهم شد و احمدی نژاد توش حماسه خواهد آفرید .

می گن خوش بین باش خوش بین چی؟ تلخی رفته تا مغز استخونامون هیچ عسلی قادر به شیرین کردش نیست.

عجب دنیای عجیبی شده من دیگه از هیچ چیز سر در نمیارم. ورقها توی سیستم دولت ما خیلی راحت برمیگرده. اوایل انقلاب منتظری قهرمان بود و دست راست خمینی بعد شد ملقب به گربه نره و جوکی نبود که دربارش گفته نشه من که کوچیک بودم و عقلم به جایی نمیرسید ولی یاد گرفته بودم که دنباله روی دورو بریهام باشم. حالا دوباره چند سالیه که منتظری شده قهرمان

از مرگش نه تنها شاد نیستم بلکه عصبی و کلافه هم هستم ولی نمیفهمم معیارمون برای قهرمان بودن یا شدن یا قهرمان بازی چیه نمیفهمم چه جوری مهره ها رو کنار هم میذاریم نمیفهمم استراتژیمون توی این بازیها چیه نمیفهمم به جز احساسات چی توی تصمیمامون دخالت داره خلاصه که گیجم اونم از نوع اساسیش و خنده داره که هر چی که میبینم یا میخونم من و یاد سیاستهای احمقانه سیاستمدارها میندازه

دیشب فیلم Avatar رو دیدم وسط فیلم زدم زیر خنده Jamie و Scott پرسیدن چی شد گفتم بعدا میگم بهتون آخر فیلم بهشون نگاه کردم و گفتم و این گونه بن لادن قهرمان شد و زنده میمونه دو تاشون جا خوردن گفتن یعنی چی؟ گفتم یعنی اینکه کسی مثل بن لادن رو آموزش میدیم میفرستیم توی منطقه که از محلیا یاد بگیره بعد اون به محلیا نزدیک میشه و از اطلاعات خودمون علیه خودمون استفاده مکنه بعد یه کودتا راه میندازه علیه خودمون بعد ما با توپ و تانک و مسلسل میریم به خدمتشون برسیم ملتم بن لادن رو به عنوان حامیشون انتخاب میکنن و میشه قهرمان و ...

I normally adopt easily. I guess that's the only great point in my character. It's 2.5 months since I have moved to Canada. No matter how hard I try, I just can't like it. What is all obssetion people have about it?

And bloody hell, people are cold I mean it really cold. I know most of Iranians are not agree with me, but hey how many countries have you lived in before? I'm talking about living not visiting as a tourist. There is a huge difference between living in one place and visiting.

I just need to solve problems whitout communication nothing will.

Some days life just sucks. Death is just surrounding you and suddenly you feel you can't breath. Yesterday was my turn just to panic and feel my chest is blowing up.

First hearing about Mom and getting confused about what to do, then Jamie's grandma who suffers from cancer. Last I wanted to hear was about Daniel particularly seeing it in his blue eyes.

I just can't stop thinking about death of any of these people. I don't know which one makes me sadder or maybe I'm playing them against each other to distract myself.

I even can't think about Mom. I don't even want to see her. I don't care what the others are thinking about me I just can't. I can't talk to her on the phone. Every time I call I'm just walking around with phone in my hand nervous and trying to hang up. I just can't !!!!

I guess all of my crazy thoughts make me to exercise myself to exhaustion even when I feel my ankle or shoulder is screaming.

Oh god at least if you think the others are old to die be nice to Daniel, he's only 21, I don't know how but find bloody kidney for him. It's very seldom I find someone such a sweetheart even as a champion. Most of them are such an asshole and you know it. Or at least I know.

Yesterday he could barely walk but made it to the pool any way. He tried hard to help me, Shakil, Moses and David to do what we suppose to do. He couldn't even make it inside of the pool. He was pretending it's enough to coach every one from outside. Pain was just obvious. When I helped Moses and asked Daniel in a funny way "lets see if you can stay dry tonight", his sweet smile along appreciation was extremely heartbreaking. But he keeps smiling, 3 days per week dialysis and counting day and night to find kidney donor.

I just can't breath ...

These are past lets hope the future will be better

می گن حضورمون در انتخابات بهمون حق اعتراض می ده. من از همین الان اعتراض دارم این ۴ تا کاندید که به زودی دوتاشون به نفع موسوی می رن کنار جای اعتراض دارن. از کی تا حالا رضایی صلاحیت دار شده؟ دکتر سحابی می گه دموکراسی یاد گرفتنیه قبول ولی أیا موسوی یاد گرفته توی کمپینش از تمام ملت بابت کشتارهای دهه شصت عذر خواهی کنه؟ چرا اینایی که راه یاد گرفتن دموکراسی رو یک کلمه حرف از اشتباهاتشون نمی زنن تا من نوعی هم شفاف فکر کنم. من با انتقام مخالفم ولی دلم می خواد ببینم به اشتباهاتشون واقفن.

A court in Iran has rejected an appeal by the two Iranian HIV researchers charged with collaborating with the United States to overthrow the government.

Physicians Kamiar Alaei and his brother Arash Alaei were sentenced to prison terms of three and six years, respectively, in December 2008 (see Nature 457, 517; 2009). The court rejected their appeal on 18 March but the news became public only last week.

The brothers' trial and convictions have been widely condemned by human-rights groups. Their lawyer, Masoud Shafie, intends to make a final appeal by 7 May to Iran's judiciary chief, Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahrudi.

A 'Global Day of Action' in support of the Alaeis will be held on 12 May and is likely to include vigils at Iranian embassies worldwide.

Do a satellite launch and a tonne of enriched uranium add up to an arsenal?

That number was well above the United Nations' nuclear watchdog's estimate of 660 kilograms in November 2008. Nature News examines the implications.

Where did all that extra uranium come from?
Iran says that it produced 171 kilograms of the material between November 2008 and January 2009. The rest, around 179 kilograms, appears to have been discovered during the IAEA's annual inventory of materials at Iran's uranium-enrichment facility at Natanz. The origin of the material is "a little bit of a mystery", says Jeffrey Lewis, a nuclear expert at the New America Foundation in Washington, DC. He believes that the Iranians may have misreported their production in earlier statements to the nuclear watchdog – although whether this was accidental or intentional is unknown.

I've heard that all you need is about 25 kilograms of uranium to build a bomb. Could Iran build an arsenal of nuclear weapons?
No. To build a bomb requires around 25 kilograms of a very specific isotope of uranium known as uranium-235. The naturally occurring uranium is only 0.7% uranium-235, and the process of enrichment purifies it so that it can be used in a reactor or a nuclear bomb.

Bomb-grade uranium is around 90% pure uranium-235, while reactor-grade material is typically just 3-5%. Iran has enriched its uranium to 3.49% according to the IAEA. That's pure enough to use in reactors, which is Iran's stated reason for enriching its uranium, but the concentration is still well below what you'd need for a bomb.

So what's all the fuss?
Technically, if Iran has 1000 kilograms of 3.5% enriched uranium, then it could obtain about 35 kilograms of pure uranium-235. In other words, Iran has got enough uranium-235 to build a bomb.

But first it needs to further purify its uranium-235. Iranian engineers could do that the same way that they made their 3.5% uranium, by passing their material through a cascade of spinning centrifuges that separates the isotopes from the heavier, and more common, uranium-238. In fact, enriching to about 5% is "most of the work", according Lewis.

The fear now is that Iran might be able to initiate a crash programme that could give them a weapon in a matter of a month or two.

Iran also launched its first satellite into orbit on 2 February – is that related to all this?
Initial reports suggested that the rocket used, known as a Safir-2, was a beefed-up version of a simple type of Soviet-era missile known as a scud, with a small, third stage on top. But observations by amateur astronomers now suggest that it was actually a more powerful two-stage rocket.

A rocket capable of carrying a satellite can also carry a warhead, so Iran's scientific achievement has military implications. But while the Safir-2 could get a 25-kilogram satellite into orbit, it would have a much tougher time delivering a half-tonne "gun-type" uranium warhead of the sort the country could produce with its centrifuges, according to David Wright at the Union of Concerned Scientists in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Safir-2 would only be able to carry such a weapon perhaps 2,000 to 3,000 kilometres. "To really get longer range they have to go back and design a whole new missile," he says.

So what does this all mean?
"I think this information is only Earth-shattering if people have an outdated view of the world," Lewis says. The Iranians have already demonstrated the ability to produce rockets and uranium. The latest advances are no more significant than previous improvements, and it will be some time before the Iranians get a true nuclear capability — if that is what they're after.

Still, he adds that "time is running out". He believes that the international community must work with Iran to create a regime of inspections that can verify their activities while building trust between it and other nations.

Iran claims to have successfully tested its 1000 MW nuclear plant at Bushehr yesterday using lead fuel rods. The reactor is expected to be fully operational later this year.

However, its danger is instrumentally magnified: Tehran could never stike, since retaliation would melt it (Israel has 5 nuclear armed undestroyable submarines). What is true is that Iran could no longer be attacked! In order to prevent Tehran form making the bomb, one has to negotiate, not bomb it, and accept Iran in the international community as any other State. On the other hand, Brazil has already carried through the enrichment process, and nobody has protested!

Any committed (I use that word in several senses) user can produce a very nasty dirty nuclear device easily. The one and only reliable solution to such problems is to ban the bomb. And to implement that ban. In this instance, that can only be acheived through a normallisation of political relations with Iran. "Extremists" are us: some years back Curtis LeMay wanted to "bomb the commies back into the stone age" - and McCain's rewrite of "Barbara Ann" continues the refrain. One can hardly criticise a proselytizing theocracy for "extremism" - it's their state-of-the-art. Would they be more or less extreme, I wonder, than a nation that has thousands of hydrogen bombs ready to go?

Top of pageAbstractThe conviction of two Iranian AIDS physicians violates international norms of justice and threatens to undermine collaborations between Iranian scientists and their colleagues elsewhere.

"Iran now has one of the best prison programmes for HIV in not just the region, but in the world," exclaimed Hamid Setayesh, the UNAIDS coordinator for the country, in 2006. "They're passing out condoms and syringes in prisons. This is unbelievable. In the whole world, there aren't more than six or seven countries doing that."

Perhaps just as unbelievable is the fact that two of the physicians who helped pioneer Iran's progressive AIDS-prevention programme are now behind bars themselves. Tehran's Revolutionary Court last week sentenced the brothers Kamiar and Arash Alaei to, respectively, three- and six-year jail terms in the city's notorious Evin prison on charges of being US stooges bent on fomenting a velvet revolution to overthrow the state (see page 517).

One of the acts that apparently attracted suspicion was the brothers' participation alongside US government officials in two US–Iranian health-diplomacy round tables held in the United States in 2006 and 2007. The meetings were run by the Aspen Institute, a non-governmental organization founded in 1950 to provide an impartial international forum on major policy issues. The chair of one of the sessions introduced it proudly as one of the "first formal dialogues for almost 25 years" between Iran and the United States.

Human-rights organizations who have examined the brothers' cases say that their detention, which began in June last year, and their convictions on 31 December in a closed trial lasting barely half a day, both fell far short of the minimum international legal norms for a fair and equitable procedure.

An especially puzzling aspect of the case is that Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has publicly supported international collaboration in science. Speaking at Columbia University in New York in September 2007, Ahmadinejad described researchers as "shining torches who shed light in order to remove darkness and the ambiguities around us in guiding humanity out of ignorance and perplexity", and he invited Columbia faculty members and students to work with their counterparts in Iran. "You're officially invited," he said.

Such dialogue — 'smart power' — should be encouraged by all sides, because cooperation in the relatively apolitical areas of medicine and science keeps open rare avenues of back-channel diplomacy. Unfortunately, 'dumb power' is currently prevailing. The action of the Iranian judiciary in this case can have only a chilling effect on such activities, and there have been ill-considered moves elsewhere. Prime examples are the shortsighted visa policies being pursued by nations such as France, which unjustly discriminate against Iranian researchers (see Nature 456, 680–681; 2008), and the Bush administration's declaration that the United States is seeking regime change in Iran by supporting 'pro-democracy' elements there. Academics in Iran who desire reform, but by self-determination, say that such covert US policies have left them vulnerable to the same charges faced by the Alaei brothers. More smart power is needed all round.

President Ahmadinejad. Your country's HIV-prevention programme has won respect in the Muslim world and beyond. As you said at Columbia University, the open scientific and medical dialogue needed to progress in issues such as the fight against AIDS must be above the contemporary realpolitik of broader political issues. We urge you today to request the appropriate authorities to review the cases of Arash and Kamiar Alaei so that the truth may prevail.

France cracks down on Iranian scientists

Agency tightens rules for foreign visitors.

Europe's largest basic-research agency, the CNRS in France, is now vetting not only non-European Union (EU) researchers working on sensitive topics, but also all scientists from Iran regardless of what they work on. Researchers allege that the move exacerbates an already difficult situation in which visa applications are denied based on nationality.

A 12 November memo, relayed by the CNRS's security office from the state national security and industrial espionage services, requires that all projects with Iran go through formal security screening, to identify ones potentially meriting further scrutiny. It translates UN sanctions that call for member states not to provide Iran with technical assistance or training that might be used for the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, says Joseph Illand, who heads the CNRS security office.

It's the first case Illand can recall of such an explicit country-specific instruction at the CNRS — although similar, if unwritten, restrictions have in practice long been in effect for Iran and other countries considered as security risks. Given the threat of proliferation, such extra scrutiny is normal, he says.

The rules expand on those introduced in January 2005, which require extra scrutiny for visits from non-EU scientists whose work relates to an undisclosed list of 'sensitive' laboratories or topics. In such cases, the heads of host laboratories must give details of proposed visits, and their opinion of the visitor, to security authorities. For less-sensitive laboratories, lab heads need only declare foreign visitors monthly, whereas no-risk labs must simply maintain an internal register that can be consulted by authorities if needed.

In recent years, Iranian researchers have struggled for academic equality and scientific access. In July, for instance, the Netherlands banned Iranians from accessing nuclear laboratories or courses, and the United States has subjected Iranian visa requests to lengthy interagency reviews in the wake of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. Britain last year also introduced tough vetting of non-EU science students.

The fact that France is cracking down on Iranian researchers doesn't surprise Carthage Smith, deputy executive director for the International Council for Science in Paris, and a member of its human-rights committee. "There are legitimate concerns in the international community at present about the risk of technology transfer to Iran and other specific countries," he says. "We can't ignore that."

But he worries about how the rules might be implemented. "Any vetting must be separate from country lists, with each individual case being judged on its merits," he says. Otherwise, overzealous bureaucrats could turn country listings into effective blacklists. Formalizing extra vetting for Iranian researchers may have secondary effects, admits Illand, in that French hosts might show less interest in collaborating with Iranians to avoid administrative hassle, or government bureaucrats may be tempted to play safe and turn down visa applications. Many within the CNRS and the French administration, he says, support greater collaboration with Iran as a form of scientific diplomacy.

Overall statistics are not available, but Nature has gathered complaints from more than a dozen Iranian scientists who allege that French authorities recently either refused their requests for visas or simply never responded.

Take Ali Tahzibi, a mathematician and Iranian national at the Federal University of São Carlos in Brazil. In July he applied for a visa to work for a year, starting in October, with Christian Bonatti at the CNRS's Institute of Mathematics, part of the University of Bourgogne in Dijon. Tahzibi took a year's sabbatical, bought plane tickets for himself and his family, rented an apartment in Dijon, and arranged schooling for his son. The visa never materialized. "To wait up until just hours before your flight in the hope of getting a visa without obtaining any response was torture for a family with a little child," says Tahzibi.

Visa-seeking researchers share common stories of being passed back and forth within the French bureaucracy. "It's a typical administrative vicious circle," says Pierre Sens, a researcher at the Paris Industrial Physics and Chemistry Higher Educational Institution, who tried to intervene on behalf of a former postdoc and Iranian national. The office of Valérie Pécresse, the minister of research and higher education, declined to comment on the allegations or their impact on collaboration, instead referring Nature to the ministry of immigration.

The cases and the CNRS policy are "absolutely astonishing, if not scandalous on the part of a country such as France, which sees itself as the cradle of human rights", says Thierry Dauxois, a CNRS physicist at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Lyon. "They need to stop looking at researchers' passports, and start looking at their work."

Iran has sentenced two of the country's HIV researchers to prison for communicating with an "enemy government" and plotting to overthrow the state. Arash and Kamiar Alaei, who are brothers, underwent a half-day trial on 31 December in Tehran's Revolutionary Court. Kamiar was sentenced to three years in prison, and Arash to six.

The Iranian authorities notified the physicians' lawyer, Masoud Shafie, of the verdicts on 20 January. He has 20 days to appeal and intends to do so; the brothers say they are innocent.

The Alaeis were arrested last June, and their detention and trial were "unfair even by the draconian standards of Iran's penal code", says Jonathan Hutson, a spokesman for Physicians for Human Rights, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Hutson points out that the six-month detention itself breached human rights, as Iran failed to meet its international legal obligations to explain the arrests, or to allow the men access to lawyers or the right to contest their detention before a judge.

And although Iranian law prohibits anyone from being detained for more than four months without charge, the state filed the charge of communicating with an "enemy government" only in December. Moreover, at the trial the prosecution indicted the men on new secret charges, now known to be the plot charges, denying them the right to defend themselves against these accusations and their right to due process.

The Iranian authorities claimed that the brothers had collaborated with scientists around the world, attended international AIDS conferences, and met with non-governmental AIDS organizations. "Those are not crimes — that's good medicine," says Hutson, arguing that the verdicts will have a chilling effect on academic collaboration between Iran and the rest of the world.

Julio Frenk, dean of the Harvard School of Public Health, echoed this concern on 15 January. The brothers' rights must be respected, he said, "so that they may continue their important work and so that all Iranian scientists and their international colleagues may feel secure about working together to solve the shared public health challenges of the world".

Last week, the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency cited an Iranian counter-intelligence official as saying that the brothers and two other unnamed individuals had confessed to working on behalf of the United States to overthrow the state, and that these statements would be televised. "Given interrogation techniques and duress known to exist in other cases like this one in Iran, any purported confession must be viewed as tainted and unreliable," says Hutson.

Researchers should support new initiatives aimed at
engaging them with human-rights groups. Six foreign medics escaped the Libyan death penalty last year thanks to intense diplomacy, supported by the advocacy and ecisive expertise of scientists. But the researchers’ involvement was largely a matter of luck and serendipity. Science and scientists have much untapped potential to contribute to human-rights issues, but until now there have been limited efforts to systematically consolidate the interactions between science and human-rights groups. Two new initiatives of the Science and Human Rights Program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science are intended to help fill that gap. Its “On-call” Scientists program launched last month aims to create a database of scientists who will volunteer time — be it a few days or a few months — and expertise, and human-rights organizations — including non-governmental organizations and international agencies such as the United Nations — seeking practical help or advice. (See) ‘Human rights’ covers a gamut of issues, from exposing abuses to disaster relief. The range of scientific advice sought is correspondingly broad — statistical or methodological help to get a more accurate picture of conflict or ethnic cleansing, advice on water issues from hydrologists, or forensic help to document mass executions or overturn false convictions. The service faces a steep learning curve in deciphering the diverse needs of human-rights groups, and how scientists might be able to help in ways perhaps not yet imagined. But better communication between scientists and the alphabet soup of human-rights groups — and between those groups themselves on technical issues — is long overdue. Another welcome initiative is due in January 2009. Many learned societies, as well as academic groups such as Scholars at Risk, have a long history in upholding human rights and academic freedom — for example, defending scientists under threat from oppressive governments, using satellite imagery to expose human-rights abuses and speaking out on abuse wherever it occurs. To put such efforts on a firmer footing, American organizations are to launch the US Science and Human Rights Coalition, a forum in which scientific bodies and human-rights groups can share experiences and best practice. Given the US presidential election, the timing could not be better. For the past eight years, American human-rights groups have seen their international influence undermined by the US administration’s diminishing moral authority and standing in the world. Scientists can, and should, help reinstate the fundamental principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

درست وقتی که فکر می کنین همه چیز و پشت سر گذاشتین یه تلنگر برمی گردونتون به سالهای قبل. با دور کردن خودم از اخبار و مشغول کردن بی نهایت خودم فکر کردم اون گذشته هه یا بهتر بگم اون کشور فراموش می شه ولی انگار غیر ممکنه.

جمعه بعد از کار رفتم خرید رسیدم به یه ساعت فروشی یادم اومد بند یکی از ساعتهام و مدتهاست می خوام عوض کنم وارد مغازه شدم. بعد از مدت کوتاهی صاحب مغازه اومد و گفت ظاهرا ساعتت باتری هم می خواد. گفتم خب عوضش کن. دوباره برگشت گفت احتمالا سرویس می خواد کار نکرد و هزینه اش زیاده. گفت چند ساله داریش؟ گفتم ۱۰ سال گفت مطمئنی می خوای پول خرجش کنی؟ از کوره در رفتم و گفتم نمی فهمی باید درست بشه و هی تاکید می کردم باید کار کنه. یه لحظه به خودم اومدم و به یارو گفتم ارزش مالی نیست ارزش معنوی داره.

از مغازه بیرون اومدم ساعتها قدم زدم و همه چیز و مرور کردم.

این ساعتی بود که چند روز قبل از اینکه از ایران بیام بیرون با جضور مامان و خواهره از شهرک غرب خریدم. تمام اون سالها و تمام این ۱۰ سال جلوی چشمم بود.
احساس کردم ۱۰۰ ساله ایم که دارم همه چیز و مرور می کنم.یعنی به این سرعت آدم پیر می شه؟

این آدمه آدم ۱۰ سال پیش نیست خیلی عوض شده از همه بدتر زبونش درازتر شده.

از چیزی نمی ترسه مثل بولدزر می گه و خراب می کنه. نتیجه نظر خواهی ترم گذشته بامزه بود. یکیشون گفته بود زهره Blunt ه.هیچ جای مخالفتی نبود.

وقتی می گم همه جای دنیا ادمیزاد مشکل داره همه می گن بدبینی
دیروز قبل ازاینکه مارک بیاد با گروهشون حرف زدم گفتم یه خداحافظی اساسی راه می ندازیم مثل بقیه تا با کدورت نره.
بعد از ظهر قرار بود اندرو رئیس جدید اینستیتو رو ببینه. چقدر من از این مردک اندرو بدم می یاد. حیف پیترنبود.

مردک بعد از ظهر قرار بود با مارک حرف بزنه. برانوینم طبق معمول دنبال قرتی بازیاش بود و حضور نداشت. منم مثلا کار می کردم.ساعت چهار مارک اومد کنار دستگاه و می لرزید من و بغل کرد گفت شنیدم داری خداحافظی برام جور میکنی ولی بهم گفتن امروز وسایلم جمع می کنم و دیگه اجازه ندارم حوالی ساختمون پیدام بشه. برانوین گفته من ترسوندمش و بر اساس مسایل امنیتی نباید باشم. با هزار تا دیروز حرف زدم و گفتم جفتشون بچه قبول. ولی رفتارتون غلط بود. ساعت هفت شب با کمک من و نیکی وسایلش و جمع کرد و رفت.
به لج همه امروز من و نیکی یه ناهار اساسی ره انداختیم و تقریبا همه می یان از لجشونم گفتیم جای دیگه. بهترین ناهار و جور میکنیم و خداحافظی می کنیم.
امرز چند تا ترسوها دور و بر اومدن می گن این براساس قانون استرالیا بود. توی چشمشون نگاه کردم وگفتم مرده شور قانونتون و برن اندرو داشت رد می شد وگفتم در ضمن از ادمهای ترسو هم بدم می یاد حیف که همه جا رییسن.
کل قضیه می تونست به راحتی برگزار بشه ولی با بازیگری زیبای برانوین قضیه گند زده شد. جالب اینجاست که دیگه یونیونی هم وجود نداره که حتی بشه شکایت کرد.

ادمیزاد موجود عجیبیه و قدرت طلبیش عجیبتر. توی هر شرایطی این قدرته بلاخره خودش و نشون می ده.

کار کردن توی محیطهای صدر در صد مردونه یادم داد که هیچ وقت از قدرت زنانگیم استفاده نکنم. اگر پذیرفتم بین مردها باشم مثل اونها کار کنم ولی همه جای دنیا زنانی پیدا می شن که به قول این وریها پر و پاچه شو دارن.

توی محیطهای علمی جالبه همه سعی می کنن با شخصیت عمل کنن و مهربون باشن. ولی همیشه این لبخندها جواب بده نیست.

امروز رسما مارک اخراج شد. یادش به خیر اوایلی که اومد تا با برانوین کار کنه بهش بارها گفتم مراقبش باش. بازی رو خوب بلده. هر جا احتیاج به عکس و لبخند و زنانگیه برانوین اونجاست. در زمان تصمیمات علمی لبخند تحویل همه می ده و همه رو تایید می کنه. هنوز یادم نمی ره روزی که سر کلاس سخنرانی فاجعه فوق لیسانسها به همشون نمره کامل داد و من بلند شدم و گفتم این سخنرانیها وحشتناک بود.

عجیب بود وقتی امروز دهنش و اون جوری وا کرد. هیچ قانون محل کاری رو رعایت نکرد و طرف و به راحتی اخراج کرد. مارک ایرادهای خودش و داره ولی حداقل کارش و بلده. عجب فیلم مسخره ای بازی کرذن. یه لحظه همه چیز برام نهوع اور شد.

چرا اینا رو می نویسم چون در عرض ۲ هفته گذشته تقریبا اصلا نخوابیدم و مثل خر کار کردم و امروز که فکر کردم یه سری کارا بلاخره تموم شد به فاصله یه متریم این دو تا مثلا محقق فاتحه خوندن به سر تا پای همدیگه.
خیلی سعی کردم چیزی نگم.

وقتی مارک می رفت گفت زهره دفتر کار من مال تو بیا جای من. نگاش کردم گفتم درد جای دیگه است جای خالی أدمها رو چه جوری باید پر کرد.

Nuclear energy — safe and secure?

The present revival in nuclear technology is prompting concerns about its safe use. Nature Materials talks to Tomihiro Taniguchi, Deputy Director General at the International Atomic Energy Agency, responsible for nuclear safety and security.
Introduction

What prompted you to take up your present position?
Nuclear energy |[mdash]| safe and secure?

IAEA

I was asked by the Japanese government whether I would be interested in this position. I worked for more than 30 years in the Japanese government, in METI [Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry], mostly in the areas of science, technology, industry as well as energy. I was also the vice-chair of the IPCC [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change], and contributed to their third assessment report. The IAEA is a very interesting place to contribute to global issues, particularly solutions for major challenges of energy and environment through advanced technology.

What are your responsibilities at the IAEA?

I am responsible for nuclear safety and security. When I came here in the summer of 2001 I was only responsible for nuclear safety, but right after the September 11 events, security became an additional, very heavy responsibility. For both safety and security, the major objectives are to prevent a severe nuclear accident such as Chernobyl, and to prevent terrorist attacks on nuclear facilities and malicious use of nuclear technology. At the same time the capacity to respond to such accidents and events is important for controlling and mitigating their impact, including the social impact. For these purposes the agency has established safety standards and security guidance documents as well as many safety and security review and advisory services on the application of these standards. In parallel, as a consequence of Chernobyl, an international framework of legally binding agreements was developed and implemented through the 1990s and early 2000s.

Is it difficult to implement good safety standards amongst your member states?

When I arrived here the nuclear world was relatively quiet. Recently, energy supply security issues, discussions on global warming, rising oil prices, and as a consequence the revival of nuclear energy are receiving a lot of attention. As this revival is rapidly developing on a global scale, there is a need for common safety standards and their application. During the seven years I have been with the IAEA we have achieved very significant improvements both in the content of the standards as well as their application. For instance, when I arrived there were long discussions in the European Union about developing European standards, but eventually they were convinced that it is much better to use the IAEA ones. Also, countries that use our assistance are obliged to use our standards, and suppliers and vendors of nuclear technology know this. Before I arrived here, the agency standards were regarded to be of secondary relevance and mainly for use by developing countries. But the situation is rapidly changing towards the global application of IAEA standards, and new nuclear plants almost everywhere refer to them.

How do you develop and control the application of IAEA standards?

It is a very open, transparent process that we established in recent years. For safety standards there is a commission at the top, and there are four committees in each major area related to nuclear and radiation safety. These committees are fully open to any member country as long as their representatives are technically well-qualified. We have a four-month period of consultation by the member states, so all can comment and request modifications and revisions of the standards. This collaborative effort is one of the reasons I feel that our standards are systematically and continuously improving. An effective implementation of IAEA standards is essential for ensuring a high level of safety. The IAEA provides safety services and appraisals of the implementation of the standards at the request of member states. Lessons learned from these applications are actively used as feedback for revision of the standards.

How about nuclear security?

This is a more complex area, because safety is primarily a science-based area, where we can maintain this open and transparent approach. But in the security areas it involves more sensitive and confidential information, which includes discussions with intelligence agencies, law enforcement and border control, all of which maintain a culture of confidentiality to protect information in the best interests of security. The challenge in this area is to strike a balance between the need to protect information from those that wish to do us harm and the need to be open and transparent in our security activities. Furthermore, human skills and experiences, rather than scientific expertise, are important in many areas of nuclear security.

You also deal with possible aftermaths of accidents.

Fortunately, as the result of significant improvements in nuclear safety, there have not been any large-scale accidents since Chernobyl. Of course national efforts are important, but they need to be complemented by international efforts. In the area of radiation safety there have been many smaller incidents where we have been helping the member states to better respond and mitigate these. And in this sense our Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) stands ready to effectively respond to events 24/7. Although fortunately there haven't been any serious accidents, we have been developing effective response capabilities worldwide. But the agency's major task is not controlling and managing accidents; this is the responsibility of the user and the national government. The agency's major function is to help the member states to better prepare and respond to such emergencies. After Chernobyl, there were international legally binding agreements, and several important conventions. As for improvements, with the support of the IAEA, the nuclear community has shared much knowledge and many lessons that have been learned following events. In addition, the IEC routinely conducts exercises to test national and international response programmes worldwide. I think sharing of information is getting increasingly important both for countries with new nuclear programmes as well as countries with mature programmes whose facilities are ageing.

What kinds of areas are important for the safety of new generations of nuclear reactors?

The planning and construction of a new plant are based on proven and demonstrated types rather than new generations of reactors. For the so-called generation IV reactors, intensive discussions are taking place but I feel it will take time until this generation of reactors will be introduced to the market. Because of such strong safety concerns, the introduction of new, innovative designs is rather slow. In the past, there have been very limited innovations, but as the market revitalizes there will be much more activity in R&D. For instance, there are industry activities to develop small, standardized reactors. Another area is intrinsically safe designs where even the loss of coolant in the reactor would not lead to radioactive releases, although the fully passive, intrinsically safe reactor is still in the process of development. Of course, such developments need to be combined with security, safeguards, minimization of radioactive waste during operation as well as the capability for practical decommissioning. All these features need to be combined with feasible economics of course.

How difficult is it for a new country to get into nuclear energy?

Actually, the challenge is again safety and security. Commercial vendors can readily supply the technology and fuels, as well as training and technology transfer. However, safety and security is clearly the responsibility of the operator and the government of the country that is to receive these facilities. I am concerned about the optimism and complacency of some of the countries who have very limited expertise and safety infrastructures, and tend to think that money can buy everything. But safety and security can not be imported or outsourced. Once they actually start building up their infrastructure and technical expertise, then they begin to understand the magnitude and duration of the challenge of nuclear safety and security. Capacity and knowledge management more generally will be a key component of nuclear safety and security. In order to prevent another serious accident, we need new thinking and a new approach adapted to the global information age. This is why I prefer to use the phrase vitae nova rather than renaissance in conjunction with the new interest in nuclear energy. What we need are fresh insights, an overcoming of old mindsets and the promotion of a modest but careful consideration.

Are we educating enough nuclear engineers?

No, and this is a challenge for new countries in particular, although it can be difficult even for countries with mature programmes who are now embarking on a relatively ambitious nuclear development — the UK is a typical example. It is difficult to quickly recruit and build up the necessary technical expertise, particularly for the regulatory side. The industry can recruit competitively with higher salaries and better benefits, whereas the governments tend to be left behind in the revitalized labour market. A big issue in the education of engineers is also the scepticism regarding science and technology, as particularly seen by the declining interest in engineering amongst the younger generations.

How will the share of nuclear energy in the primary energy supply develop in future?

The share of nuclear energy cannot increase much further because the overall energy demand and consumption is growing very fast. As the supply of oil and gas tapers off, most of this gap will be closed by coal. Nuclear energy, and to some degree renewables, are only supplementary to this development. In my opinion, we should be focusing very much on increasing efficiencies — not only the efficiency of our use of energy but also the efficiency and cleanliness of using coal. Achieving clean and efficient coal is a real challenge, particularly for developing countries. If you look at China and India, future power plants are predominantly coal. Even if things go well in developing nuclear energy, the nuclear share in overall primary energy is 6–7%, and within the electricity and power supplies maybe 16–17%, at most 20%, depending on the timelines. The remaining part needed to replace oil and gas will have to come both from higher efficiency and from coal. Replacing the current 400 nuclear power plants is a big challenge, and to build many more reactors beyond that in a safe and secure manner would be an even bigger challenge. Extending the lifetime of present power plants would of course be a very cost-effective way, because the machines are very robust, but we need to carefully assess how to manage the ageing process.

To keep the nuclear option open, we also need to recycle nuclear fuel.

The long-term supply of nuclear fuel is clearly a problem if we rely only on uranium. But if we recycle fuel and use plutonium, we have enough resources for over a century. Also, thorium resources are estimated to be greater than uranium resources. However, the benefits of fast reactors cannot be enjoyed unless we establish an economical fuel cycle and recycle. But we should be aware that recycling fuel for fast reactors is more complicated than for the present light-water reactors. To make use of thorium also requires conversion. For the development and deployment of recycling technologies, suitable safeguarding and storage of the recycled fuel becomes important as this fuel is much more radioactive and with higher proliferation risks. Therefore, recycling facilities should be limited in numbers and should basically be managed as multinational facilities.

Does safe long-term storage exist?

In my opinion the lack of long-term storage facilities becomes an issue only if we adopt recycling options. For the moment, recycling is very limited and therefore the issue of high-level radioactive waste is not as critical as it would be with recycling. The real issue is how we manage spent fuels in the long term. We need to have a good regulation and monitoring system, and keep spent fuels as a potential future fuel source without hurrying too much into recycling. Short-to-medium term we still have enough uranium and thorium resources, so I do not see the urgency of recycling. Even to build a new reactor takes easily 15–20 years, so recycling may become an issue in only about 20 years.

Nuclear energy is a controversial issue for many. What is your response to these people?

The important thing is a transparent and science-based approach with high credibility that enhances confidence in nuclear energy not only from the public but also from those owning, operating, managing and regulating all this. Therefore I feel an attitude often referred to as constituting 'safety culture' based on openness, transparency and sharing of experiences and lessons is the key issue. In many ways, our agency can support and promote this and make nuclear energy a safe, reliable and clean form of energy.

'Nuclear' is not the question

In this issue we take a closer look at recent developments in nuclear energy. Obviously, this remains a very sensitive topic to many. On the one hand, nuclear power is a reliable source of energy that uses cheap fuel (at least at present) and therefore holds the promise of stable energy prices, even when taking into account the costs of construction as well as decommissioning. It is also regarded as a technology with comparatively low carbon dioxide emissions. On the other hand, many people fear that the risks of nuclear accidents outweigh the benefits.

For these reasons the commissioning of new nuclear power plants has been halted in a number of countries and research in nuclear technology has been reduced significantly. However, in the face of significant increases in fossil fuel prices as well as insatiable demands for cheap energy in rapidly developing countries, nuclear power has seen a significant revival. According to International Atomic Energy Agency figures, at present there are 439 operating nuclear reactors worldwide, with 35 under construction.

The renewed interest in nuclear energy has been met with criticism, but the significant improvements in nuclear safety of recent years need to be acknowledged. Some of these initiatives are detailed in our interview on page 686 with Tomihiro Taniguchi, Deputy Director General at the IAEA with responsibility for nuclear safety and security. Obviously, an important issue in nuclear safety remains the human factor, but even this threat is minimized by the development of passively safe nuclear reactors, where a complete failure of all systems would lead to an automatic slow-down of the nuclear reaction.

At the same time, further improvements in nuclear technology can be expected from generation IV reactors that are currently under development. The high operation temperatures envisioned for these reactors are crucial to be able to use the fuel more efficiently, and at the same time allow the production of hydrogen using the process heat from the reactors. Indeed, in his Commentary on page 680 David Hill, Deputy Laboratory Director for Science and Technology at Idaho National Laboratory, argues that a broader use of nuclear power beyond electricity is essential to realize its full potential. Last but not least, next-generation reactor designs also help to mitigate the challenge of long-term storage of spent fuel as they allow the use of more recycled fuel. However, these high operation temperatures also create challenges in materials research, some of which are highlighted in a Commentary by Robin Grimes, Rudy Konings and Lyndon Edwards on page 683.

Will these advances in technology signify a landslide shift towards a greater use of nuclear power? Probably not in the near future. It will be impossible for the construction of new power plants to keep up with the overall increase in energy demand. Unfortunately, this gap in energy production is filled mostly with coal, particularly in China and India. In 2007, their nuclear share in electricity generation was only 1.9% and 2.5%, respectively, compared with 19.4% in the United States and 76.9% in France. Therefore, it is crucial to develop green technologies to mitigate the effects of these fossil energy sources.

Although the global share of nuclear power in primary energy is only 6% (16% for electricity), nuclear power has to have an increasingly important role in our energy supply. In particular, nuclear energy offers a constant base load that is capable of supporting the crucial boost in the more volatile renewable technologies such as wind, solar and tidal power.

Nuclear energy is here to stay, and its use should and will continue to increase. As fossil fuel prices rise, the benefits offered by nuclear technology will become more evident to the average consumer, and the political pressure to intensify the development of nuclear technology will increase. Given the long lead times for the construction of new nuclear power plants, we cannot afford to wait and see. More intense research efforts towards the advance of nuclear technology are needed, now.

سنگسار خانوادگی دختر ۱۴ ساله در زاهدان

بنابر اعلام سايت رسمی نيروی انتظامی، «در زاهدان پدری که به دليل مسائل ناموسی اقدام به سنگسار دختر ۱۴ ساله اش کرده بود با شکايت مادر دختر» دستگير شده است.

روزنامه اعتماد نيز در شماره روز یکشنبه خود جزئياتی از اجرای سنگسار خانوادگی سعيده ۱۴ ساله را منتشر کرده است..
به نوشته اين روزنامه، به دنبال مراجعه زنی به نيروی انتظامی زاهدان و ابراز نگرانی نسبت به سرنوشت دختر ۱۴ ساله اش که توسط پدر بدبين به اجبار از خانه به مکاننامعلومی منتقل شده و ديگر به خانه بازنگشته، ماموران نيروی انتظامی، محمد شريف، پدر اين دختر را بازداشت کردند.
محمد شريف در جريان بازجويی ها طی اظهارات تکان دهنده، نحوه قتل سميه را تشريح کرده و گفته است: «من از چندی پيش متوجه شدم دختر۱۴ ساله ام رفتارهای مشکوکی دارد. ابتدا سعی کردم با آرامش با موضوع برخورد کنم و با تحقيقاتی که انجام می دهم بفهمم سعيده چرا چنين کارهايی انجام می دهد. او بی دليل از خانه بيرون می رفت و وقتی ديرهنگام بازمی گشت توضيح قانع کننده يی نمی داد. بالاخره تاب نياوردم و با او دعوا کردم ولی اين کار نيز فايده نداشت چون فرزندم مرا متهم به بدبينی می کرد و می گفت هيچ کار خلافی انجام نداده است.»
محمد شريف گفته که «پس از گذشت مدتی به تدريج به يقين رسيده که سعيده با مردی رابطه دارد و از بيم بر باد رفتن آبروی خود تصميم گرفته است که سعيده را بکشد و خودم را از اين ننگ نجات دهم.»
وی در خصوص نحوه انتخاب شيوه سنگسار برای قتل دختر ۱۴ ساله اش گفته است: «بايد شيوه ای را برای کشتن دخترم انتخاب می کردم که او به سزای واقعی کاری که انجام داده بود برسد و بالاخره مصمم شدم وی را سنگسار کنم.»
وی همچنين گفته که چون به تنهايی قادر به انجام سنگسار دخترش نبوده به يکی از دوستانش به نام غلام نيز محل سنگسار را اطلاع داده و وی نيز به همراه چند نفر ديگر در محل قرار برای سنگسار دختر ۱۴ ساله حاضر شده و در اجرای سنگسار به پدر اين دختر کمک کرده است.
محمد شريف همچنين در بازجوئی گفته که دخترش را در روز تعيين شده برای سنگسار به زور از خانه خارج کرده و به ارتفاعات هلور در حوالی زاهدان برده است.
اين پدر متهم به سنگسار دختر ۱۴ ساله اش تاکيد کرده که سعيده «در تمام طول مسير وحشت زده بود و با اينکه می دانست عاقبت خوشی در انتظارش نخواهد بود اما مطمئن نبود که چه مجازاتی را برای وی در نظر گرفته ام.»
به گفته محمد شريف، پس از انتقال دختر به محل مورد نظر وی دخترش را روی زمين انداخته و سنگسار او را با همکاری دوستانش شروع کرده است.
وی در عين حال گفته که سعيده ۱۴ ساله در حين اجرای سنگسار خانوادگی مرتب جيغ کشيده و با خواهش و التماس تلاش می کرد جانش را نجات دهد اما پدرش تاکيد کرده که برای آنچه وی«دست يافتن دوباره به آبرو» و «داشتن زندگی شرافتمندانه» ناميده «چاره يی جز کشتن او نداشته است.»بر اساس ماده ۲۲۰ قانون مجازات اسلامی،« پدر يا جد پدری که فرزند خود را بکشد قصاص نمی شود و به پرداخت ديه قتل به ورثه مقتول و تعزير محکوم خواهد شد.»

China’s earthquake potential (redder = more dangerous)

The May 12, 2008 earthquake (hand-drawn black star) occurred along the LongMenShan fault, which was responsible for magnitude ~6 quakes over the past ~400 years. A more active fault at the north of the May 12 quake in the SongPan area produced stronger quakes including the 7.2 in 1976 and 7.5 in 1933

The LongMenShan fault is mostly a thrust fault produced by the eastward “escape” of the eastern Tibetan Plateau

Over the past 30 hours a total of 46 magnitude >= 3.5 quakes have occurred. Most of the aftershocks are on the NE part of the mainshock. The largest aftershock is an 6.0 occurred 15 minutes after the mainshock

Notes about earthquake prediction

For a successful prediction, three critical parameters must be predicted:
1). Location (the error must be within a few hundred km)
2). Time (error within a week or so)
3). Magnitude (the error within one magnitude unit – a difference in one magnitude unit corresponds to a 32-fold difference in energy release!)
Potential for magnitude > 6.5 aftershocks is high
At the present time, no one on earth can predict earthquakes
Some claimed “precursors” such as strange behaviors of animals are not consistently observed before most of the large quakes. The problem is the same for more scientific precursors such as ground tilt, water chemistry changes, changes in earth’s gravity and magnetic fields, and changes in atmospheric features (“earthquake clouds”)
